Koi No Yokan

Koi No Yokan (Japanese): The sense upon first meeting a person that the two of you are going to fall into love.

This is different than “love at first sight,” since it implies that you might have a sense of imminent love, somewhere down the road, without yet feeling it. The term captures the intimation of inevitable love in the future, rather than the instant attraction implied by love at first sight.

DEFTONES ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF SEVENTH STUDIO ALBUM: KOI NO YOKAN NOVEMBER 13, 2012

NATIONWIDE HEADLINING TOUR KICKS OFF OCTOBER 9TH
August 30, 2012 - Grammy-winning alternative rock band Deftones have announced the November 13th release of their seventh studio album, entitled KOI NO YOKAN. To support the release they will hit the road on a nationwide headlining tour, with special guest Scars On Broadway, which kicks off October 9th in Ventura, CA and will conclude on the West Coast mid November. Tickets on sale next Friday, September 7 via Ticketmaster.com.

KOI NO YOKAN was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Rush) who also produced Diamond Eyes. Front man Chino Moreno summed up Deftones' sound in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying "Obviously we're an aggressive band - not the heaviest, but there's a lot of attack. He continues, "But there's also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that's my favorite part of the band. To me, it's the epitome of what the Deftones do."

From their 1994 debut Adrenaline to their platinum-certified, Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-winning breakthrough album White Pony, Deftones have continually crossed-over genres, defied categorization and delivered compelling live performances around the world. The Sacramento band's 2010 release Diamond Eyes was named iTunes' "Rock Album of the Year," as well as KERRANG!'s 2010 Album of the Year. Diamond Eyes also graced many other critics and readers "Best Of" lists, including MySpace, AOL Noisecreep, Alternative Press, MOG, and Drowned In Sound.

Exclusive: The Deftones Talk New Album, Tour [i doubt people will ever stop calling them "the" deftones]

California heavy rock band The Deftones will release their seventh album, Koi No Yokan, on November 13 via Warner Bros. The band will support the disc, which the group wrote and recorded directly after touring on their last album Diamond Eyes, with a nationwide tour and the recently released single “Tempest.” We had the opportunity to sit down with drummer Abe Cunningham and keyboardist/DJ Frank Delgado in Warner Bros’ Los Angeles office to discuss the new album and upcoming tour. Apparently, if you can believe the musicians, there are free kittens involved.


When did you decide to start working on a new album?
Abe: You know it’s funny, we got off this Diamond Eyes tour – the last record – and had done about a year and a half [of touring]. But we were really excited when we finished that record like we couldn’t wait to do another one. So we went and toured and we got home from the last show in Moscow and we took about a month off and that was it. We went right back into writing, which is extremely quick for us. We were really antsy and excited to keep the momentum.
Frank: It seems like it’s kind of just been going on. It really wasn’t a break, honestly, between that album and this one. So it’s been this perpetual feeling of just going.

What do you attribute your excitement to?
Abe: We adopted a new way of doing our thing. It was very efficient. It’s easy to get burnt. It’s a hectic lifestyle, you know, touring. You get in this rut – writing, recording, touring. This is our seventh record now and it’s grueling, man. But our last record, Diamond Eyes, before this one, we just said, ‘You know what? Let’s try to do this right.’

Do you all sit down and decide what kind of album you want to make beforehand?
Frank: No, not at all. We just wanted to get into a room – we did get into a room and that’s what we’ve always done. We just kind of jam around until we find something that we all think is kind of cool and build on it. And if we keep building on it, it gets cooler, we save it and give it a working title name and put it on the board and jam it out for a while. Once we find another one, we add it to the board too. It’s that building of those blocks and doing it in a timely fashion where we would say, ‘We’re going to start at noon, we’re going to end at 6 p.m. and we’re going to do as much as we can in that time period.’

When you say you jam out the songs, how important is it for your music to evolve?
Frank: That’s the point of it, to find that next part of it. It all just doesn’t come at once. Once you find something cool, whether it’s a drum beat or something, then we have to build on that. That’s the whole point of just playing it over and over and over… So by the time we get to our list of 12 songs, we’ve already played them all nonstop, constantly. So by the time go make a record, we can play the record from beginning to end.
Abe: That’s how it was with our first album. You have your entire life, so we went in the studio for our first record, we had already played the songs hundreds and hundreds of times. Second time around, we pretty much had it written but you get in that thing of writing, recording, you know, and suddenly we were writing half the record in the studio.
Frank: It just isn’t efficient and cost effective that way. It’s fun but, I mean, in this day and age to really be efficient and make the best use of our time we’ve figured out that writing it all before the best way to do it.

Do you feel like this album is a logical continuation of what you did on Diamond Eyes?
Frank: Yeah, I think so. I think just because of the immediacy and how fast it happened too. I just think it’s us just wanting to keep going and keep going with this feeling of creativity. The albums are good book-ends for whatever’s in the middle of it all. It was perfect timing. But we’d like it for them to live on their own.

Did you think about how you’d play the songs live when you were making the album?
Abe: Not really. They get better and better as we go. We figure out what works in a set and obviously having brand new songs we’re so excited to play is exciting. This last time around with Diamond Eyes we ended up playing almost that entire record every night with everything else and it went over really, really well.
Frank: There’s really no preconceived anything when coming to how they’re going to sound and how they’re going to play live. The more we play it, the better we get at it and then we realize after the fact, ‘Oh, this is going to be fun to play live.’ It’s never like, ‘We have to write a song this way.’

What are your plans once the album comes out?
Frank: I would be happy if we toured for a year and a half. Two years would be awesome.

When does your fall tour kick off?
Abe: October 7th, Ventura. That’s the only date I know.

Is there anything special you’re planning for the tour?
Frank: Just fucking put on a good show basically. I mean, it’d be nice to play some more of our newer songs. But it’s hard. We’ve got seven records and we got to cram seven records into hour and a half.
Abe: We’re going to all the animal shelters in each city and getting kittens and giving them to the fans. We’re going to throw them out in the crowd.

What if they told the truth in them, wouldn't that be interesting?

"You know, it's really funny, the recording process for this album actually went exactly like the recording process for our last 5 or 6 albums. Pretty much it's the most uninteresting thing you could ever imagine, but you gotta take one for the team, or as we call it in the music industry, "camp". Then we're gonna tour. That's going to suck and we'll probably break up fifteen times before we ever step foot on the Bon Jovi-mobile. It's all gonna be Chino's fault. Love the guy, but let's face it, the dude's pretty inconsistent and kind of does whatever he wants whenever he wants. He even started doing his hair in the rockabilly style again. We're going to put on the happy face though and pretend we like playing the same shit we just spent a fucking year playing over and over... over and over again. I bet the shows here in the States will be fucking awesome and all the people are going to be wildly getting off to the new stuff and not just standing around with their arms crossed looking at us like "when the fuck is someone going to get naked or eat shit or something?" -- That always makes the whole mountain of crushing debt thing totally worth it. No, really that's sarcastic. Who wants to play a show in America? Nobody. Not a fucking single person. Not even Ted Nugent. Well, maybe the super poor bands who can't book shows anywhere else other than Gadsden Alabama, but that's not really our "style". We're just gonna go out there and like, I don't know, play. Play really good because playing good is good in comparison to just going out and playing really badly. That wouldn't be very good. I don't think the fans would like that and be glad that they payed for that, at all. Hopefully no one leaks the album this time. Oh shit. Just seen half of it on Youtube. Chino's not going to like this. Someone put "pallet of cocaine" on the tour rider. We're gonna need it."

It sucks.

I like it, but I don't feel like any of it is really standing out. It's easy to listen to as background though.

I am so bored after 2 listens! Where's the magic? It's like chino ran out of chorus juice and had to substitute leftover verse juice. I'm not impressed.
