Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Post by NOT MONGO on Mon Nov 21, 2011 4:33 pm

now im pumped- it takes place 8 years after tdk and i have some quotes from the empire article:

Christopher Nolan Talks About The Prologue & More!

"Our story picks up EIGHT years after The Dark Knight".
In terms of finishing our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft an epic"
"It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we are testing Batman both physically as well as mentally. Also, in terms of finishing the our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft epic so the physicality of the film became very important."

Nolan On Bane:
"The Prologue is basically the first six, seven minutes of the film. Its the introduction to Bane and a taste of the rest of the film. With Bane we are looking to give Batman a physical challenge that he hasn't had before. He's a great sort of movie monster, but with an incredible brain, and that was a side of him that hand't been taped before. Because the stories from the comics are very epic and very evocative---very much in the way that Bruce Wayne's origin story is epic and evocative. We were looking to really parallel that with our choice of villain. So he's a worthy adversary. I felt that if I could get somebody as talented as Tom to agree to hide himself in the character I would get something very special. What I really feel with a great actor is every movement, every hand gesture, every step, has performance in it. Tom completely got it. It's an incredible challenge to remove motion of the face so that you can't put things across in the usual way, and you just have the eyes and a bit of the scalp and the arms and legs. What I knew is that from Tom I would get something where you get a total character and everything has incredible thought applied to it. And a lot of what he's doing is very counterintuitive. He has this incredible disjunct between the expressiveness of the voice and the stillness of the movement of his body. He's found a way to play a character who is enormous and powerful with a sort of calm to it, but also is able to incredibly fast at times. Unpredictable. He just has a raw threat to him that's extraordinary. It's a very powerful thing when you see it come together, beyond what I have ever imagined. That's what you get from working with great actors."

"The Riddler was never a contender". - Hardy was Nolan's first choice!

"The world of Batman indeed the world of all graphic novels, deals with archetypes, and there's a very real sense in which the Joker is an extreme and an absolute. So when you're looking to continue the story, then you certainly don't want a watered-down version of a character you've already done. You want a different archetype. What Bane represents in the comics is the ultimate physical enemy.

The world of Batman, indeed the world of all graphic novels, deals with archetypes," he says, "And there's a very real sense in which The Joker is an extreme and an absolute and Batman is an extreme and an absolute. So whe you're looking to continue the story - in this case finish Bruce Wayne and Batman's story, as we see it - then you certainly don't want a watered-down version of a character you've already done. You want a different archetype. What Bane represents in the comics is the ultimate physical villain.

It's really all about finishing Batman's and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place at the end of The Dark Knight. His reputation in tatters, on the run. And I think perhaps surprisingly for some people, out story picks up quite a bit later. He's not in great state. He's frozen in time, he's hit a brick wall. Batman Begins was very much about the explaining the logic of the suit, and how it belonged in the shadows, in a position of stealth where he's able to intimidate people with it as his new entity. And then through The Dark Knight we would him out during the magic hour and we changed the suit accordingly so he withstood that kind of exposure. But also the character himself has the reputation now, so he;s able to expose himself more and still intimidate people. And with the third film we're pushing that further...but plenty of it takes place in the dark too."

Lindy Hemming Gives Details On Bane's Mask

THE BREATHING MECHINISM: "He was injured early in his story. Hes suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at the back where there are two cannisters of what ever it is..the anasthetic"

UPDATE

Tom Hardy On Bane
"He's brutal. Brutal. He's a big dude who's incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It's not about fighting. It's about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action. He's a smashing machine. He's a wrecking ball. If we're going to shoot somebody, shoot the pregnant woman or the old lady first. Make sure everybody stands up. He's a terrorist in his mentality as well as brutal actions. He's horrible piece of work."

Christian Bale:

"I wasn't familiar with Bane. Although I vaguely remembered just a crazy "roid-looking" guy with a mask. You know what I mean? I remember him less actually on screen, and more people telling me that, and wincing just like you did. I just trust and have faith in Chris I know he wasn't gonna mess around with making poor decision on the bloody villain was!
it does harken back to that notion that this guy is originated from great pain and he has to address that--but at what point does it become indulgence? The question is how long do you allow pain to dominate your life? He has to try and answer that and move on."

All that ever really means is that you're emotionally invested in the film so your opinion is more likely to be one of the extremes.

the prologue was fucking incredible- zimmer's score is going to be amazing based on what i heard in the prologue.. mission impossible was actually really good and had funny moments... the third act felt like a typical spy/action film though and was actually a low point for me..

Never watched any Mission Impossible movie, but I think Josh Holloway is in this one. If so, was he in it a lot? That is pretty much the only thing that would make me want to watch one of those films.

MI 4 was fucking incredible. Josh Holloway is only it in for the beginning though.

The Dark Knight Rises trailer was pretty disappointing. Bane is totally unintelligible and I hope they have subtitles in the movie for when he talks.

They provide you with everything you need to know in the movie.

In fact I would tell a person who has never seen any Mission Impossible movie to watch this one before watching any of the others. Mostly because this is the only really good one.

I thought Bane was easy to understand at first, when it was just talking... but as soon as all the action started happening, the Foley started drowning out Bane's articulations and I couldn't make out anything anymore. Seems like a pretty easy fix, since he wears the mask the whole movie and his voice is filtered enough that re-looping wouldn't make a single difference in authenticity.

Loved MI4 btw.

I'm going to watch this movie in a few hours. I'm going to 7 Eleven to pick up some snacks and I'm going to sneak in a couple of PBR cans in my cargo pockets. Screw the expensive commie snack prices at the theater. I'm going commando. It's the American way.

Cheers!

Re: The Dark Knight Rises

Post by NOT MONGO on Sun Jul 22, 2012 8:11 pm

saw it twice so far and seeing it again tomorrow. saw it in imax the first time (the real 70mm imax film) and was spectacular. saw it on a regular screen today...

i have a couple plot hole problems with it: specifically when bruce goes to meet the captive Lucius Fox (who is with Miranda TATE-ALIA) with Selina and Bruce says hello to Miranda and so forth. Then a scene or two later and Bane sees the flaming bat symbol on the bridge and says "impossibru" even though he is secretly working with Miranda/Talia and she should have already told him Bruce was back...

The device/software plot device that can wipe someones existence/history clean is kind of whack and i hate how something powerful like that can be tossed from hands to hands like no big deal. also the logistics of such a device/program are completely impossible. you can tell Nolan (the director with no email address or cell phone) must have written this in because it seems he has no understanding of the interwebs or technology lol...

I see a lot of people complaining and asking: "how did bruce get back into an occupied gotham?" well the answer is simple and not exactly shown on screen. while i cannot explain how bruce flew back from the other side of the world to gotham. i can pretty much assure everyone that once he got to wayne manor (which is located in the palisades outside or on the very edge of Gotham- as mentioned by Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight) he then flew via "the Bat" inside Gotham which explains why we last saw the Bat in the batcave and then later on it is suddenly under a tarp on the rooftop (when Bruce goes with Fox to obtain a radar jammer from the Bat)... So that explains that supposed plot hole.

but really, the movie is very solid and any plot hole or complaint is seriously nitpicking...

Go see this on Imax.

Also, I wish there was more Bane, I think we saw more of the Joker in TDK than Bane in TDKR..

Wouldve loved to have seen more Catwoman and Batman Banter...

oh yeah, last problem: I think Nolan shouldve have drawn out the time the Bat flew out passed the harbor or just shouldnt have included a closeup shot of Batman in the Bat like literally 5 seconds before it blew up. It makes the possibility of him using the autopilot to fly the bomb further away from him a huge stretch lol.

Im not sure if I rank this behind, ahead, or beside The Dark Knight. But I will say that this has been one of the best film trilogies of all time, certainly the best comic-book movie trilogy if there are others to compare to!

Miranda/Talia had some huge knockers....

That's my detailed review of this film.

I like to imagine that any billionaire as worldly and rich as Bruce Wayne would keep a little bit of emergency money in various banks around the world just as a safety net. That's how I would explain Bruce Wayne being able to travel back from North Africa to Gotham. Either that, or a crafty Bruce Wayne learned how to get places while you're poor back when he was living among criminals in Batman Begins.

As for the software criminal record wiper device thingy, I chalk that one up right next to the device that allows Batman to see through walls using sonar data from people's cell phones. It can't exist in real life, but that's okay with me.

I guess, but it's not like it ever showed them with walkie talkies or something. At that point, as far as Bane knew, Batman was still wallowing in prison.

So software that can remove your criminal record is whack? But a billionaire becoming a superhero isn't? Or a supervillain taking over a city isn't? Or an air to air airplane raid isn't? Ha, c'mon man. There are a lot more ridiculous things in Batman than that. I think something that can run a few SQL DELETE statements is far less crazy than a lot of things in these movies.

This movie was way better than I was expecting it to be.

I think it cements this trilogy as marathonable!

what i mean is they just use that "software/device" as just a couple throwaway lines... we view it as a usb drive for like a second... its just a plot device that doesnt really carry any weight to the story as much as other things (and i know thats the whole point is selina wanted to start over another life, and she does with bruce)...

a billionaire superhero is kind of more realistic in the james bond sense, yeah... what about those costumed and armed people in seattle? now picture one of them being wealthy...

it just wasnt presented well in the movie, we never actually see what it does and all we get is a few lines of exposition... i dont know why but i just had a little problem with it, thats all

It's just a MacGuffin right? You're not supposed to focus on them, they are just there to drive the characters forward.

so essentially the brains behind occupy/destroy gotham, who is supposedly being held captive with Fox, could not have somehow alerted Bane through their men that Bruce is back? Strong overlook. Its not a big deal but its just one of those things you notice. Like in Jurassic Park when the T-Rex steps out of the paddock, which is at road level, and then suddenly theres a gigantic cliff in the paddock when the T-Re throws Tim in the explorer over the edge. Just a continuity error..

I think it's just as likely that she feels him being there doesn't affect her plan at all. And maybe she wants him there, just so he can fail.
