I have my job interview tomorrow!

Post by NOT MONGO on Mon Nov 28, 2011 8:08 pm

thanks to you guys im familiar with a few things... im kind of nervous just because i have so much riding on this interview, i hope i dont screw this up!

any tips?

im trying to figure out some of my strengths and weaknesses. I might say my weakness might be something like "I have high expectations of myself and sometimes I project that onto other people when they are working at their own pace." Should i go into more detail? What are some good strengths and weaknesses that dont sound cliche? For strengths I might say that "I'm going to school for Information Systems Management, so I'm taking computer science and business classes that are beneficiary to what an Applications Specialist does such as having some familiarity with computer software and computer languages while also being familiar with Human Resources and other business concepts."

what do you guys think?

thanks for any continuing advice!

You don't want to respond with any real weakness that would give them a reason to not hire you. Your weakness sounds like you'd be shitty to work with, because you'd be a dickhead to other people. You probably want to keep your weakness as something that would only affect you. And have it be something that you can easily conquer on your own time.

As someone who has interviewed a fair number of people, normally you use that question to weed out people, who for whatever reason think being brutally honest with that question is a good idea.

When I ask that question I want an answer that makes me feel like on some level you might be self aware enough to have thought about that question. And I don't want you saying anything that will make me feel like I don't want to work with you.

If you do want to use a similar weakness to that, I wouldn't mention that you project that on other people. I would say you get frustrated with a slow pace in your team's work, but you focus that through something constructive like finding ways to motivate them to move at a better pace.

This way you've answered their question and turned it into a strength.

Have a little fun with your interviewer. If you can learn anything about your interviewer before or during the process, you could find a way to appeal to them on a more personal level. You know you've really knocked an interview out of the park when you asked more questions than the interviewer did.

When I was interviewed for the NFL job, I found out that my interviewer was a Giants fan. I used that information to steer the conversation off the boring repetitive stuff that they go through many times a day, and went ahead and started trash talking the Giants to the point where the interviewer was more interested in defending his team than figuring out what my strengths/weaknesses are. Eventually the conversation was inevitably going to be steered back to the actual job in question, but only a few minutes in, I already had the interviewer's complete attention, and the interviewer already WANTED to like me.

Of course you're probably not going to be talking football trash with your interviewer, but the point is that your interview shouldn't feel like an interview. It should feel like a friendly conversation that highlights how much of a joy it is to talk to you and be around you, rather than what sort of experience you have or traits that would help the company. It's about being memorable, and in order to do that, you have to steer the interview to a place where it almost isn't an interview anymore.

Of course that's easier said than done, and sometimes interviews are just meant to be interviews. In that case, you have to treat it like a first date with a girl. Make sure you ask more questions than the interviewer does. (I've said this already, and I'll say it again if I have to.) You should make sure that you're good at listening and improvising, so that when you ask the interviewer a question, and he/she answers, then that answer should immediately lead to another question asked by you. Don't be too confident about your ability to do this. Practice on a friend or relative to make sure you can keep the line of questioning going, while keeping the conversation interesting and natural.

The person who wins the job is always going to be the person that the interviewer wants to see again, regardless of your strengths, weaknesses or experience. So while it's important to have a good set of answers regarding your work-related traits, it's even more important to just...simply...be...memorable.

tl;dr: Don't have an interview. Have a conversation.

Another thing to keep in mind... there are ways to showcase your knowledge and experience without SAYING that you have knowledge and experience. Use your own questions to illustrate that you know what you're talking about.

In my case, I didn't give my interviewer a chance to ask me to go into detail about the scheduling experience I listed on my resume. Instead, I just immediately started asking my interviewer about how they do their scheduling, what software they use, what they think of that software, what sort of problems they run into, etc. Just like my previous point on asking more questions than answering, I used my own questions to prove my knowledge on a subject, rather than waiting to be asked about it. This will make you seem MUCH more informed about the subject, and as long as the interviewer is the one doing all the talking and answering, it's impossible for you to give a wrong answer yourself.

One more thing...

Ask the biggest asshole you know to give you a mock interview. Find a guy who you know is going to be annoying with his asshole questions and responses. Find someone who wants to bury you and prove to you that you suck at interviews. If you can come out of that alive, then you'll be more than ready for your actual interview.

I asked my former boss. He wasn't really an asshole, but I knew he had the ability to be, and I asked him to be extra brutal on me during my mock interview. I came out of that mock interview almost crying, and when I went in for the actual interview, everything just seemed like a total cakewalk.

Ideally, you want your mock interview to be had at the last possible second before your actual interview. That way those cobwebs don't have time to redevelop. I literally had my mock interview, took 5 minutes to regather myself and drink a cup of water to soothe my nerves a little bit, and then immediately drove to my real interview and my attitude going in was like "Go ahead, give me your worst."

Oh... and... show up early enough so you can get to know the company's receptionist really well. There's always a good chance she will be asked what she thought of you. Your interviewer isn't the only person you need to leave a good impression on.

so i think the interview went pretty well although the questions that were asked, i wasnt exactly prepared for...

one such question in particular was something to the extent of "name a personal trait that you hide or dont want others to know about you." at first i misheard her so i started off saying i was creative but then i backtracked and explained i wasnt sure how to answer that question. i expressed that im generally an open person but just not "in your face" with it...

some questions i paused and had to think or struggled just a bit to answer. it was almost stressful.

That sounds like more of a trap question than one they would actually hope you'd answer. I believe they ask questions like that to see if you'd bite and tell them you do drugs or some shit like that. That question is like saying, "Tell me your deepest darkest secret that you would never want to tell us." Fuck that, I'd just be like, "I try not to hide anything. I don't think I'm that mysterious of a person."

And then I'd wait a half moment and go, "*cough*Irapeandkillpeople.*cough* Sorry, you wouldn't happen to have a throat lozenge would you? God damn changing weather...."
